Critically Linked: How Books of the Past Shape our Futures. The new DiscourseNet’s podcast

Apr 21, 2023

Thomas Jacobs, Professor at the Université Saint-Louis — Bruxelles, was one of the guests on DiscourseNet’s new podcast series “Critically Linked: How Books of the Past Shape our Futures”.

The third episode of the series discusses Ernesto Laclau’s writings on post-Marxism, which have given rise to many concepts that continue to inform contemporary discourse analysis: antagonism, hegemony, the logic of equivalence and the logic of difference. Society, according to Laclau, is not a closed project, but always open. Almost 40 years after the publication of his book (with Chantal Mouffe) – “Hegemony and Socialist Strategy: Towards a Radical Democratic Politics” (1985) – what can Laclau’s philosophy still teach us? Alongside Eva Herschinger, one of the first authors to introduce Laclau’s thought into international relations, Thomas, covers many ongoing debates in Discourse Theory: what is antagonism? How is it related to identity? Are we condemned to oppose each other?

Critically Linked is the new podcast from DiscourseNet. Hosted by Dana Trif and Jaspal Singh, the goal of this podcast is to bring “old” philosophers back into the digital public square. The guests talk about theories, concepts and the real world. What can we still learn from classical texts? How can we use the past to shape our future(s)? These are some of the questions we intend to address in these podcasts.
