Description
EDMO BELUX 2.0 is a multidisciplinary hub that brings together fact-checkers, media, disinformation analysts, media literacy organisations and academics to monitor and mitigate disinformation in Belgium and Luxembourg. Through extensive communication and community efforts, EDMO BELUX 2.0 reaches first responders to disinformation (media, civil society, government) and interested audiences.
With fact-checks, investigative reports and monitoring studies, EDMO BELUX 2.0 minimises the reach and impact of disinformation. Further, EDMO BELUX 2.0 media literacy campaigns, interventions and trainings raise awareness and build resilience among citizens and professionals, enhancing understanding of media processes and disinformation flows. Finally, through its analysis of the impact of disinformation and platform responses, the hub supports a multidisciplinary community seeking to safeguard democratic processes in Belgium and Luxembourg.
EDMO BELUX 2.0 adheres to the agenda of the Digital Europe Programme and therefore follows the objectives hereunder:
1. Actively participate in the governance of EDMO and the reinforcement of the EDMO network, and report regularly to the EDMO network and the European Commission about BELUX activities.
2. Pull together and foster the growth of a regional multidisciplinary independent community of fact-checkers, media literacy professionals and disinformation researchers.
3. Detect, fact-check and disclose harmful disinformation within Belgium and Luxembourg in the French, Luxembourgish and German languages, and contribute to joint (across hubs) fact-checking projects of the EDMO network.
4. Conduct and support tailor-made media literacy initiatives within Belgium and Luxembourg in the French, Luxembourgish and German languages and contribute to joint (across hubs) media literacy projects of the EDMO network.
5. Conduct empirical studies and investigations on the mechanisms and impacts of disinformation in Belgium and Luxembourg, contribute to joint (across hubs) research projects of the EDMO network and to the EDMO network’s activities aiming to improve the access to online platforms’ data for researchers.
6. Support the monitoring of online platforms’ policies and implementation of the Code of Practice on Disinformation in Belgium and Luxembourg, and contribute to monitoring activities coordinated by the EDMO network.
7. Communicate through various channels and carry out communication campaigns with the aim to reach wide audiences and promote EDMO BELUX 2.0 activities, as well as the EDMO networks’ activities, in coordination with the EDMO network.
EDMO BELUX 2.0 is a continuation of EDMO BELUX . It is one of fourteen projects to have received EU funding to set up national and multinational observatories to monitor, analyse and counter disinformation.
EDMO BELUX 2.0 is coordinated by Trisha Meyer of Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Within UCLouvain Saint-Louis Bruxelles, Geoffroy Patriarche serves as co-lead of EDMO BELUX 2 and Victor Wiard leads WP2 on ‘Fostering the growth and the capacity of the BELUX multidisciplinary community to tackle disinformation’.
