Olivier Servais est professeur ordinaire d’anthropologie et depuis 2019 doyen de la Faculté des sciences économiques, politiques, sociales et de la communication de l’Université de Louvain (UCLouvain). Il dirige la revue internationale Social Compass, SAGE, Londres. Depuis 2009 il est membre du board de l’International Society for Sociology of Religion. Il enseigne également à l’Institut des Arts de Diffusion de Louvain-la-Neuve. Historien et anthropologue, il a mené des travaux de terrain et de recherche documentaire au Canada, aux Philippines, à l’île Maurice, en France, en Belgique et dans des mondes numériques. Dans ses recherches actuelles, il étudie les imaginaires des mondes virtuels, la sociabilité en ligne, y compris les rites, la socialisation des jeunes, les résistances par le digital ou au digital, et l’organisation des groupes numériques à la marge. Il est cofondateur du réseau Carta Academica qui défend l’engagement des universitaires dans le débat public.

Olivier Servais is Full Professor of Anthropology and since 2019 Dean of the Faculty of Economic, Political, Social and Communication Sciences at the University of Leuven (UCLouvain). He is director of the international journal Social Compass, SAGE, London. Since 2009 he is a member of the board of the International Society for Sociology of Religion. He also teaches at the Institute of Diffusion Arts in Louvain-la-Neuve. Historian and anthropologist, he has conducted fieldwork and documentary research in Canada, the Philippines, Mauritius, France, Belgium and in digital worlds. In his current research, he studies the imaginaries of virtual worlds, online sociability, including rituals, youth socialization, resistance through or to digital, and the organization of digital groups at the margins. He is co-founder of the Carta Academica network, which advocates for the engagement of academics in public debate.
