First REMEDIS Workshop – 25.10.2022 – Brussels

On Tuesday 25 October 2022, the first REMEDIS workshop was held between the participants of the REMEDIS research project at Université Saint-Louis – Bruxelles, Belgium. The purpose of this first workshop was to understand the issues underlying the research conducted within the disciplines of the three teams involved in the research project (funded as FNRS-FRS-PDR) and to develop a common language necessary for cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Each team was in charge of animating a one-hour panel based on short presentations from their members used as a basis for brainstorming with the scholars of the other disciplines. Daphné Chapellier and Marie Dufrasne from the USL-B team, focusing on information and communication sciences, made a presentation about “Analysis of disinformation context and limits of fact-checking” discussing the relevant concepts related to disinformation before emphazising the limits of fack-checking for fighting online misinformation (with the backfiring effects and confirmation bias) and the lack of evaluation of the long-term effects of such a practice. We invite you to visit the website of the project, which is an interdisciplinary project combining research(ers) in digital law, social science, information and communication, history, and computer science. It aims to provide innovative regulatory frameworks and legally compliant socio-technical solutions to monitor online disinformation and its effects.
